WORKSHOPS

There will be two workshops going on at a time. Please note that each class has an associated skill level. Beginner (beg) is brand new to early bronze. Intermediate (int) is solid bronze to early silver. Advanced (adv) is solid silver to gold. Some workshops are for all levels (all) or are social workshops (social).

Dancing Outside the Lines in Smooth and Standard

  •  Learn to use body energy and stretch to make your dancing extend beyond your fingertips and elbows.
Connection with your Partner and Your Dancing in Latin

  • This workshop is an introduction on how connection with your partner effect how you dance and how your partner dances in Latin.
Basis of Movement and Turn

  • Learn how to create a smooth yet powerful movement across the floor in the swing dances and Tango. Learn how to create large, quiet movement while minimizing effort during turns.
Bridging the Gap: Turning a Ballroom Dancer into a Swing Dancer (beg)
taught by John Karvounis and Maddie White

  • Learn new styles of swing dance.  The workshop will cover basic of swing, lindy hop, and blues dancing.  We will adapt moves and technique from ballroom for the social swing dances.
The Standard Frame and How to Use It

  • The frame is used to maintain your partner's feet in the same relationship with your feet. We'll teach you how to stand and how to hold your partner to achieve this end.
The Floor: Making Relations in Standard and Latin

How to Nurture a Successful and Happy Dance Partnershop

Hips Don't Lie: Latin Technique

  • Beg-Adv
  • Aim to improve quality of movement in your Latin, whether as a newcomer or an advanced dancer. Focus will be on creating movement through proper use of hip and foot position, along with body alignment.
Left Turns and Right Turns
taught by Alex Wilson and Lara Kleinfelter
  • Int-Adv
  • The grey ISTD standard ballroom book was written back when partners danced in a tiny embrace with no offset. Since then, movement has grown, frames have expanded, the offset has increased, and the techniques used have changed accordingly. This workshop will provide you with a consistent set of principles for applying the newer techniques to left turns and to right turns. 
Musicality (Standard and Latin)

  • This workshop will focus on musical phrasing and how to express it
    through your choreography choices. We will also discuss different
    types of syncopation and how they apply to each of the dances.
Creating Body Actions in Samba

Active Partnering: Bringing Out Untapped Potential

  • Learn how your and your partner's responsibilities work together to make standard dancing easier, more dynamic, and communicative. On the competition floor, your partner is the only person that wants you to win. Learn how working together can help that happen.
SUNDAY WORKSHOPS
Tango: It's A Trap!

  • This workshop will focus on the use of lower body connection, such as "trapping" your partner with your knees, to create dynamic and staccato movement.
Enhancing Performance on the Dance Floor
taught by George Arnold and Tommy Wyderko
  • Beg-Int
  • This workshop is designed to improve the mechanics of the "performance" aspects of your dancing.  We will look at how to improve performance from three angles, 1. preparation, 2. the actual performance 3. reflecting on your performance.  This class should be very useful for beginner and intermediate dancers.  Advanced dancers are more than welcome as well. 
West Coast Basics with a Twist
 taught by Dylan and Liz

  • It will focus mainly on the basics of West Coast and variations to make them more fun and interesting.
Defining Roles: Standard Swing Dances
 taught by Matt Harkins and Yo Matsubara
  • This will cover the mechanics of how swing dances work, what it means to be a good follower, and how to dance together and be efficient.  (all levels but probably more beneficial for solid bronze/silver and above).
Spice It Up: int west coast moves and variations
 taught by Ryan Hayes and Laura Pendleton
  • Int-Adv
  • Expand your repertoire with ducks, rides, dips, and syncopated footwork.  Variations on moves you probably know will also be included. 
You're Already a Smooth Dancer: Let Me Show You
 taught by Natalie Plumb

  • Do you think American Smooth looks corny or unattainable? Don't consider yourself graceful or "smooth"? Well, guess what? None of those traits is a requirement for dancing Smooth! From your natural Standard posture, to your methods of turn in Latin, you already have Smooth in your body. Let me help you identify it and uncover the talents you don't know you have! 
Foxtrot Mechanics
 taught by Matt Harkins and Yo Matsubara
  • This covers how fotxtrot is differentiated from waltz. We will break down what you are supposed to be doing for each count (1 & 2 & 3 4). This will include how to move or roll through the feet which will help with all the swing dances and take big steps. This should also help girls with heel turns as well.
Creating Power Through Dynamics

  • Learning how to use leg and core strength to create powerful dancing. We will go over the what, whens, whys and hows of power in Latin.
Improving Stability and Control: Latin Technique
 taught by Jessica Smith 
  • Int-Adv
  • We will focus primarily on the use of the core, back, and legs to create increased stability and control.
Hips, Dips, and Drops
 taught by David Cunningham
  • Int-Adv
  • Learn about how to use your hips and butt to counterbalance for swivels and booty-sit. Pick up some basic dips and then a couple dirty traps and dips too. Finally, drop your partner with the windowshade deathdrop and a floorsweep.
